About
As a Pan-African organization our mission
is foster the Self-empowerment of black
students academically, financially, and
socially with the ultimate goal of
strengthening the wider black community.
The York University Black Students’ Alliance is a student-run Pan-Africanist organization whose mandate is to serve the needs of the Black student population at York by being an active service on campus and in the greater Toronto community. One of our main purposes is to highlight and challenge the manifestation of systemic discrimination and racism practiced through various mediums, both on and off campus. Our goal as an organization is to also provide a space on the York campus which fosters a sense of community and empowerment to our membership through the promotion of Pan-Africanist thought, and giving different critiques of the history and future of Black people on the African Continent and in the Diaspora.
The members of YUBSA represent nations throughout the Continent and the Diaspora. Members include international students, permanent residents, and Canadian citizens. The services provided by YUBSA to its membership of all black student include: forums and discussions that foster a better understanding and appreciation of Black cultures, histories, support to faculty and administration on issues surrounding the Black community, as well as providing other educational and social activities. In addition, we have also established a mentorship program which allows our members to tutor elementary and high school students in the university’s surrounding community, as well as 2 $500 scholarships through York University’s Scholarships and Bursary program, which are awarded to two members each academic year.
